Today I was 1.7kg lighter than last year. My TSB was -10, last year it was +6. It was looking shaky for a PB. During my warm-up, I swapped out my deep dish front for a not so deep dish as coming down the hill was scary with the wind that was present. The best thing about the same course each year, is one can judge form and race themselves.
The Plan
Exactly the same as in 2016 – get in a lap as recon/warm-up, ride a protocol warm-up on the mag trainer and aim for 11:20 a lap and at the very least, PB.
The Race
I seemed to be spot on wattage wise lap one and climbing the hill at 32kph. Heading past the start/finish zone and up the hill towards the eastern turn around, I was sitting on around 50kph. Passing the chute to end lap one, I’d clocked 0:11:34. Not too shabby as 20 seconds faster than last year per lap would be great.
Lap one was ridden at my ever elusive goal speed of 40kph. This sapped a lot of my energy as the next time up the hill was slow. On lap one, I’d been above 32 for most of it. Lap two was below 28 and under 20 in the last 100m of the climb.
Despite the slow climbing on lap two, my time was on par with a good lap from last year. It was lap three that things really slowed. I was faster up the climb than lap two, but much slower from the top to the Geelong turn around. During the race I was thinking the wind had picked up. It had.
Strava says I set a decent time coming back from the turn around to the finish and my computer says the wattage for laps two and three was the same. This means the 17 second time hit on lap three was environmental. My position seems ok. Perhaps I need to tweak it some more.

My 2017 time (Official): 0:35:42.x (39.33kph).
My 2016 time (Official): 0:35:46.759 (39.24kph)
My 2015 time: 0:35:56.346
My 2014 time: 0:36:22.415
Summary
A nice strong first lap. Then not so good. Power wise, laps two and three were the same, so while I was thinking the wind appeared to pick up on lap three, it must have.

42nd overall and 21st in Masters. Official results sorted from fastest to slowest and popped into my own spreadsheet. The winner of Masters B would have come second in Masters A. The winner of Masters C would have come second in Masters A also. Hmmm.
Update 11/04/2017
Wow, I’ve just got my hands of the final results and they differ a little. I’ve moved from 6th to 5th as the supper dooper winner apparently rode a 0:36:51, not a 0:33:05.

Peter’s Images has a great photo gallery from the day. Heaps better (more photos, more in focus) than the other guy IMO.
