Harcourt Year 4

No getting to 75kg like I proposed after last year’s race – this year I was 1kg heavier, so I was not expecting a pb based in the hypothesis that 500g equals 20 seconds. Bike wise, I adjusted my front end 1cm lower than last year, so I was a little more aero.  Test riding of this position resulted in increased pressure on my perineum.  Thankfully, in January 2016, the UCI changed their rules again, allowing for up to 9 degrees of saddle tile (they used to have to be flat).  Adjusting mine 2.4 degrees, no more pressure.

Though I hate this course for its hills, it is great that it has been on the calendar for the last four years as that way, form can be judged. Continue reading

2016 Baw Baw Classic Review

Numbers for this year’s event were up, mainly due to an influx of A grade elite men.  My grade swelled by a single rider.  The plan (ever so optimistic) was to finish top 10.  I’d ridden the climb four times in the last month and set a pb on my final attempt.  All without the 98km pre-exhaustion match burning race and the first 3 times in bog standard 52×28 without stopping.  With some decent power during the tapering weeks, I was hopeful.

This year I hit 80kg four weeks out from the event.  Easter put a dint in that, though I managed to hit the race start line at 80.8kg.  Last year I began at 82.6kgs. Continue reading

Round 1 of the Vic TT Series – Waurn Ponds

The Plan

Get in a lap as recon/warmup, ride a protocol warmup on the mag trainer and aim for 11:20 a lap. Today I was 600g heavier than last year.

The Race

Things went to plan at the start.  I kept it above the required speed (the watts were a little high) and I stayed aero all the way to the top.  Coming down, I needed to pass a female rider passing another rider while I had another rider coming towards me up the hill.  This cost me a few seconds. Aust Masters Track Champs

The Plan

This time I made sure my bike was set up ready to race the night before.  Given I am nowhere near fast enough to podium at national level, I whacked on a crazy gear of 52 x 14 for an experiment.  My usual gear for this event is 49 x 14.

Like all my pursuits, I memorise my schedule and if I am on the front straight, adjust as I go.  This race, I was set to ride from the back straight, so this pursuit was going to be ridden on feel.  As it happened, my opponent was a DNS so I got to ride on the front.  Perfect as I’d get to see my lap times and adjust.
