(Equal) Highest Race Av Ridden

The Plan

The same as yesterday – just hang on and not get dropped.

The Race

I was thinking the “hang on, do not get dropped” plans are pretty bad. I was sitting at the back, hanging on and thinking, these plans mean I never try anything.  So, half a lap later, I was on the front chasing down a break that had gotten out to around 150m.  Half a lap later, I swung off the front and let two other riders close the final 10 metres.

The race felt a little harder than yesterday, probably due to my tired legs, and most likely due to the power metrics being a little higher.

The first lap was ridden at a sedate pace.  The next lap saw the attacks begin.

I was almost dropped with three to go as I followed a rider who wound up being gapped on the “climb”.  Soon I was back on.

With about 8 laps to go, one rider was off the front and another had bridged to him.  Bicycle Superstore was not doing any chasing as one of their’s was in the break.  This mean the bunch cruised along not chasing.  If my legs were good, I may have had a bash.

On the last lap, I got halfway up the bunch along bottom straight and held position for around the last 500m, though was way too far back to bother trying to sprint for third.

Summary

Today I set my equal fastest average speed for a race – 42.6kph.  I’ve not ridden that fast since a handicap in 2006.

2015 Vic Masters ITT Review

This year I rode quite well, setting many personal bests and finishing 14th in the overall and 11th in the age adjusted rankings. 2015 saw a total of seven races, a nice up from the 4 (or last minute, poorly advertised 5) run in 2014.

Personally, I prefer flat out and back courses.  The courses were a mix of flat, undulating and hilly, so are best for the lighter riders.

Race 1 – Waurn Ponds / Geelong. Undulating.  19th in B grade with 38.3kph – pb by around 25 seconds. Continue reading

Legs Strong But Heavy

The Plan

Every ride I’ve done this week felt hard, but the stats all said the rider were at recovery level.  Today with a sliding grading system in place at Warragul, I was in B.  The plan – not get dropped.  Maybe do some chasing.  Place in the sprint.

The Race

After the intermediate sprint at the end of lap 8 (in which I came third), an attack went though it was reabsorbed a few laps later.

For most of the race, I sat towards the front, after 20 laps, I decided to sit in until the sprint.  I still wound up towards the front on the last three laps.

On the final corner, I went from first to almost last and needed to put in a strong chase.  I never caught the winner, though I did manage to hold off a fast finishing Simon B.

RM, Richard N and Jimmy L took off at various times, but the 1 or 2 man breaks never lasted.  Richard seemed the strongest, or at least he started most of the breaks.

The winner corners with ease.  During the race, when I was on his wheel, I thought I was cornering ok, and Craig was rolling away from me. He was first through the final corner.  It was all over from there.

Summary

Last week I averaged around 37kph pretty much on my own.  Today it was 35 in the bunch.  Quite obviously, my power was ready high as there is no way this was a threshold level race.  The critical power reading feels about right though.  I placed.
