Casey Crit on Tired Legs

The Plan

The warmup revealed tired, heavy legs thanks to yesterday’s ITT. That did not alter the plan – don’t get dropped and spend at least one lap on the front and chase down at least one break.

The Race

The race felt harder than last week, and looking at the metrics it was. Power was up 20 W and at the end of the race, I’d averaged 42.1kph – a criterium record.

Today’s race was a lively one. Lots of attacking that eventually lead to four riders getting about 200m off the front with about eight laps to go.

Early on, I chased down a solo break. After that, there was an attack. As I was at the front, I did not have to go all out and by the time the pace has subsided, I was on the back. At one point I lead for a lap (probably my chase lap) and rode what is probably my fastest “solo” lap – 00:03:03.

With six laps to go, I was getting irritated that nobody was chasing the break (it looked like there was some active blocking going on up front). So, I jumped on the front and chased for about 3/4 of a lap. The break was brought back a little, but when my legs fell off, the break extended their lead.

Two laps later I was at it again, chasing the break down and sitting around 315-325W. This lasted for another 3/4 of a lap or so. After that, I slipped towards the back.

With a lap to go, the bunch finally started to chase. The break was now three riders. The bunch left it too late. I finished in the pack.

Summary

Good to still be with the bunch with ITT depleted legs. Good that I (think) a lap was ridden on the front at record pace and even better that overall, the race average speed was my fastest crit ever.

Peak power today was 1021W and was obtained in the first lap.

Burrumbeet ITT Year 2

The Plan

I looked at last year’s race and worked out where I needed to be at bend one, the turn around, bend two and the finish in order to ride 41.2kph.  Thus:

  1. 00:03:25 (got there in 00:03:30)
  2. 00:13:30 (got there in 00:13:48)
  3. 00:23:35 (got there in 00:24:40)
  4. 00:27:05 (got there in 00:28:05.4)

The starting order was A grade, then B, C, D, women, para.  Somehow, I’d been placed in D and was the second off in this grade. Continue reading

Bye Bye B Bunch

The Plan

I was fully expecting to be in A grade this week, so when I signed on electronically and found I was still in B grade, I felt a bit dodgy racing.  So, the plan was the same as last week: sit up front, chase breaks after giving them 100 or so meters breathing room. Win (thus earning a promotion to A grade for sure this time).

The Race

Over the course of the race, around 6 riders (out of I think 11) were keen to test our legs.  Four or five one to two man breaks went up the road.  All but one break was started up the hill, the remaining one, through the bend after the start/finish line.

Starting off, I was second wheel.  Around the lower bends on lap one I got to the front and tended to stay there.

Two laps in, an attack went up the hill. Things settled down by the line.  This was repeated on lap 3.

On lap five (I think), I tried to make a move into the lower bends, though I was stuffed early into that, so I was unable to get a break.  Another attack went up the hill on lap five.

I am not sure at which point of the race it occurred, when we’d just caught a break heading down to the bottom of the course, when a counter move went.  The move lasted maybe 200m, before relaxing.  This may have been lap eight based on the speed data.

Up the hill on lap nine, it was attack, attack again.  A rider got away.  I eventually chased him down and an attack went up the hill at the end of the lap again on lap ten.

Laps twelve to fourteen saw the most action in the race, with plenty of attacking and chasing.  Here I wound up on the back having chased hard and worn myself out.

There was lull during lap fifteen and then two riders got away for a little bit. One of those would eventually finish second.  After seeing what the bunch would do, I got to the front and pulled the break back.  Out bell lap was delayed thanks to some track congestion.  Our second last lap was slow and led by me.  I stayed at the front until the lower bends where I dropped back to third wheel and made sure I stayed there.

Coming around the second last corner, one of last week’s stronger riders made his move.  In short order I was in the lead.  I could see a rider’s wheel behind me to the right.  Before I got to the final bend, I seemed to be out of gears.  The danger rider was there for maybe half the home straight before he must have backed off.  I kept my head down and pushed.  The winning margin was biggest than last week, maybe a length.  The third placed rider appeared to be grumpy with my win.  Not to worry, the handicapper’s whacked me up for next week.

Summary

After doing lots of work and leading from the second last corner, I’m out of B grade.  A good ride given the number of matches I spent pursuiting down four or five breaks.

My peak speed during the sprint was 54.7kph, down on last week. Peak power during the sprint was 1086W, also down on last week, as were my overall power readings.  My HR maxed out at 196 during the sprint, so I’m 24 according to the 220 minus age thing.
